April 22, 2020 MX cover illustration

Initial cover art done for 4/22/20 MX issue before final published version.

This week’s new issue of the alt-weekly Asheville Mountain Xpress paper features a new cover illustration by me. The paper needed a humorous cover design to accompany the cover story about local social-distancing mandates that have become “The New Normal” due to the worldwide Cover-19 pandemic. It was also requested that, in addition to showing the new criteria for shoppers that are in place, there should be some call back or comparison to the even greater sacrifices at home that needed to be made in previous generations faced with a worldwide crisis, such as World War II.

Published version of the cover art with headlines and text added.

I decided to take some of the “propaganda” posters from that era and repurpose them as updated posters for the current situation we all face. One poster didn’t even have to be re-worded. Here are the original poster designs:

World War II vintage posters persuading Americans at the time to watch their mouths; vacation at home, buy bonds, do with less, and generally do all they can to help the war effort.
