As was the case in 2018 and 2019, the local alt-weekly paper in Asheville, The Mountain Xpress, expressed a desire for me to once again create a local-themed cover illustration for what has become an annual “humor” issue for the paper.
The centerpiece was decided to be the nearly 100 year old “Flat Iron” building that was recently in the news for being sold to be turned from offices to another hotel for the downtown area. Having a steampunkish air ship docking on the top of it was also decided and the local villain, the TDA was affixed to the side with new acronymical meaning.
Also in the issue, besides my usual weekly local cartoon, was a page of color comics in the “Sunday Funnies” tradition, all done by me. I used what passes as my “recurring” comic strip characters for the local cartoons in these, but added an extra dimension of comic page look to them by creating each one in a style of art that resembled a more famous and lucrative comic strip.
Below are some examples of the cover and comics, but you can also see the digital version of the whole issue here at ISSUU.
