Local alt-weekly paper, The Mountain Xpress in Asheville, commissioned this illustration to go with their upcoming article addressing the problem of sexual harassment in the local food and beverage service industry.
This was the version used, modified from a finished version I had submitted with a female server dressed in a more traditional, yet dated uniform. The paper decided they wanted a more hip (tattooed, etc.) server to closer exemplify those that make up the Asheville, NC workforce. I also made the silhouetted characters leering out from the server’s trays a bit less menacing as they were in the original and shaved some of her hips off to make her “less sexy, in a traditional way” as other notes I received requested. I may have made the hips a bit too narrow, but the illustration still works as a metaphor for a besieged food service worker, hopefully.
