Streep Leaning Curve

Day 29 of the monthlong celebrity caricature challenge, Caricature Resolution 2019, is here, and the subject of the day is multi-award-winning actress, Meryl Streep

After the past two days of highly-rendered caricatures, I wanted to do a looser, sketch-type of style on this one. The thing is, I didn’t want an actual sketch, just a looser, but still refined style. What I found was, the actual sketch I roughed out initially looked better than the more-involved version I tried to do, using the rough sketch as a guide.

After much refining, I found I had overworked, or otherwise ruined what worked for the first sketch, and it no longer even had the resemblance to the subject that the initial rough gave me.

So I went back to the round and just erased some of the stray lines, but used the rough as is, because it looked better! Just goes to show… sometimes less is more, overworked is worse than simplicity, or, I don’t know, something profound…

Version of Meryl Streep caricature I ended up using.
Initial rough sketch I started with.
Overworked version that ended up not looking like her at all.
